Faculty of Health/Creative Industries IT/Computer Support Officer

Tasks & Responsibilities: Computer support, SOE installs, lab rollouts, ghosting, testing, software & hardware installs. Providing Computer maintenance, Active Directory modifications, procurement of hardware and software. Assisting in the Disposal of hardware, relocating staff computers and stocktaking IT equipment. I also successfully completed awareness in ITIL training course.

Daily Event Coordination which included assignment of Quantum logged jobs, providing direct phone support, replying to emails from external vendors, relocating computers and updating the IT asset database. Logging warranty requests with external vendors, Ghosting and backing up clients PC’s and Mac’s, imaging and erasing PC’s for disposal or redeployment and procuring new IT assets for staff members.

Daily tasks: of assisting staff members with problems related to Eudora, virus and spyware removal, Windows XP & MS Office problem solving skills, installation of software, providing professional IT advice and archiving clients data onto server and to DVD.

Experience: Learning to work as a team by liaising with other team members within the IT area, documenting new procedures, becoming multifunctional: handling non IT tasks such as IT procurements, disposing of IT assets, liasing with faculty staff at meetings and morning teas & gaining reputation/trust from the client.

Achievements: I achieved accelerated real world experience in the most busiest IT sections at QUT, before working for QUT Creative Industries and QUT Faculty of Health; I was not adept in the professional workplace and so whilst with QUT I learnt very rapidly how to provide Professional IT service on daily basis.
I have completed training in ITIL awareness whilst employed at QUT.

Investment HQ Pty Ltd Web Site Designer

Responsibilities: Designing the web site, testing, debugging and hosting the website.

Duties: Designing a navigational website that is easy and attractive to the user, fixing updating & testing errors in the code. Using Mac OS X, Adobe Golive CS and many web browsers to test the website.

Achievements: Being more proficient and creative in web page design. Communicating with the client-keeping client informed of progress during the project.

Outcomes: I successfully completed the Website including the backend programming that went with form page. I became more time efficient, more customers focussed.

BIST degree was a combination of Information Technology and Communication studies including computer programming (C++/Java), issues in IT (security), networking engineering (TCP), Internet technologies (WWW, HTML, XML), e-commerce and internet marketing (site cookies, web advertising), statistics (SPSS, plots, graphs), Logic skills (logic gates, electronics) and other topics including website design, web script programming, learning the function of operating systems and business information systems.

Skills & Attributes

Open Source: Being part of the Open Source community I learnt to use Linux, FreeBSD and Open Solaris to do most common tasks undertaken in Windows environment such as web browsing, file management, word processing and creating spreadsheets. By utilizing UNIX it was a chance for me to learn C++, Java and Perl; I continually strive to keep learning more styles of open source programming. I have also successfully established open source servers such as Apache and Samba I have become more knowledgeable of how these servers can be used on a day-to-day basis.

Miscellaneous projects

Better Securing Notebooks Project: involved better securing Faculty of Health staff members notebooks by implementing a log off and back up system to the University server, providing Kensington locks for notebooks to prevent theft and allowing Administrator access, so the client can install printers and broadband without IT support.

Backing up clients profile to a Windows server using Linux or a BartPE Project to investigate and document how to backup the Faculty of Health Windows PC to the Faculty server by using Knoppix Linux i.e. by starting up a Samba server and sharing the internal hard disks or using BartPE as alternative and setting up network file sharing to backup clients profiles. Other documentation tasks included How Eudora, MS Outlook/Entourage, QUT Diary, QUT Webmail are to be installed and supported at QUT, and how to successfully migrate a client from Eudora to Outlook exchange. As a project I documented these procedures that were already established by the IT Section but had no official documentation were written about them.

Building Computers from procured parts I have successfully built or upgraded over six PC’s during the last five years. I am able to install the main board, CPU, RAM, Graphics card, PCI cards, drives and connections to create a fully working computer. I have hands on experience in building computers for family and self, I have bought parts from online computers and computer markets. I have learnt allot about PC building from connecting the various plugs to the main board to installing the CPU and heat sink onto the main board correctly.
